“RUST BELT” OR GLOBALLY SIGNIFICANT CENTER?
Today the Manufacturing Belt is still regarded as the most important industrial region in North America. Associations of decline that are evoked by the graphic designation “Rust Belt” apply in particular to locations such as Pittsburgh or Detroit, which have to cope with the decline of the traditional coal and steel industry or structural change in formative branches of industry (especially automobile production; see Map 217.2). This is also reflected in changes in use of the inner cities.
However, the name Rust Belt should not mislead people into believing that the Northeast of the United States as a whole has been affected by the decline. On the contrary: The high-tech industry in the Boston area (electronics, biotechnology) and the intensely networked service locations of the financial sector, trade, education, the media and transport in New York or Washington are exemplary for modern economic areas with a global presence and their importance political and cultural importance is reinforced.
USA, Canada – economy
The rise of the United States into a leading industrial and technological economic power began in the last decades of the 19th century. Even before the outbreak of World War I, the United States had overtaken Great Britain, which had previously been the leader in industrial production. The economic success story of the USA has been promoted by various factors: rich natural resources, the climatic and landscape diversity as well as favorable political framework conditions for economy and companies. A differentiated location pattern emerged with regionally different economic focuses.
The map gives an overview of the spatial distribution of the locations of agriculture, mining, industry and services in the USA, Canada and the northern part of Mexico.
RAW MATERIAL DEPOSITS AND DOWNSTREAM INDUSTRIES
The great importance that traffic routes such as railroad lines and highways had and still have for economic development is still clear today in Canada, where the centers of population and economy lie like lines along the traffic corridors. Industrial activity in Canada is limited to a narrow border in the south of the country, to the north of which there is almost exclusively the extraction of raw materials (mining) or the use of hydropower to generate electricity. Also in the western USA and in Mexico, where there are extensive mountains, steppes or semi-deserts, the basis of economic activity is often the extraction of raw materials and precious metals.
